Model Ships Overview
You make model ships for scale representation of ships. Such models could be miniatures, standard or large. The size ranges from 1/6000 to large vessels that are even capable of holding people. The scale model is a representation of an object, which is either larger or smaller than the actual object. The basic object of manufacturing scale models of any object including ships is to provide a view of the object at a glance and to provide guidelines. Another pertinent object of making model ships is for the purpose of gaming or decoration.
As a craft, ship modeling is as old as the trade of shipbuilding. The origin goes back to the days of initial development of water transport system. First of the type were the wooden model ships that were used basically for floating games and interior decoration of residential houses. Some larger models were also used in parks and places of entertainment including water bodies where people participated in boating.
When you visit a museum you will find many models representing various real time objects. Museum quality scale model ships and boats are quite common in such places.
